September Newsletter – Falling into Fall

Heyooo! Here we are. Summer is over for us, and as we slip into cooler fall weather, we’re hunkering down and getting stuff done. It’s been… a year, let me say. And it’s not quite over yet!! Here’s what’s been going on for us.

BLANKETS

We were honestly getting a little worried about the blankets since they hadn’t arrived all August, which was when we were expecting them. But then lo and behold–they’re here! ALL of them, in fact. We were expecting the second batch in October, but hey. This means we’re sending out all the Kickstarter rewards now! If you backed our Kickstarter, keep an eye on your mailbox!

This means the blankets are also primed to pick up from our shop now, if you missed the Kickstarter! You can find them all here.

There’s a few things we’ve learned from this Kickstarter, and mostly it’s that things just aren’t the same anymore, especially with shipping. Tariffs and overall increases in prices have made fulfilling campaigns like this difficult. This is now the second Kickstarter we’ve run where tariffs were completely changed right after we’d already collected funds, making it a very stressful and expensive issue. We’re wondering if we can even continue to fund our works through this way anymore. It’s… rough. We’re still just waiting to see how all of this settles, but it really doesn’t seem to be settling any time soon, and that makes even more stressful.

I hate to be down. We’ll still run campaigns for our books/comics (those are less affected by this Mess), but it is a struggle to just figure out what to do anymore. I, frankly, just don’t understand why all this needless complication had to happen… And sadly there’s really nothing we can do about it.

CONSIGNMENT STORES

Okay, I’m taking the wheel and putting us on a happier road now. Stores! I’ve probably mentioned this before, but our stuff is available in a few stores across Canada–so if you happen to stop by there, you can check out our wares!

  • Artist Alley (Montreal): this lovely store was our first foray into this kind of thing, and we’re still going strong! We’re going to be stocking our new blankets there soon!
  • Makers Market Mall (Calgary): our first Makers store, nestled in the big mall in Calgary! Come see our stuff there!
  • The Royal Tyrrell Museum Giftshop (Drumheller): if you ever go to this wonderful dinosaur museum (and you should, it’s amazing), you’ll also be able to stumble into our stuff in the giftshop! This is our newest store and I can’t tell you how much of an honour it is to have my stuff in the museum of my childhood.

NEW IN THE SHOP

Aside from our new blankets, we have something else special that just dropped in…

Pretty Boy Hats! (Version 2.0!!)

We’ve been very excited about these all year, and we finally have them! Handwritten embroidery, custom buckle logo, and awesome white stitching. These are fancy. Pretty, even. The first version of these hats were such a big hit, and we were sad when we sold out of them. But they’re back now, baby! Now you can show the world how pretty you are!!

You can find them here!

FANGS AND ALL

Hey wow!! We’re now LESS THAN A WEEK away from Fangs and All’s release (October 6th!) There’s still time, of course, to preorder–and you won’t have to wait long to get it in your hands!

I recently received my author copies and the books came out stunning. I’m very happy with them and can’t wait for everyone else to get it, too!

Of course, the lovely folks at Crossover Comics are helping me once again have a book launch event for Fangs and All, on October 10th! I’ll also be doing a presentation on How to Pitch a Graphic Novel, so you can come by, learn a thing or two, and then get a cool book that I’ll sign for you. Sounds pretty good, I think.

Hope to see you all there!

CONVENTIONS

We’re into the last bit of shows for the year, the holiday ones. So far we’re only confirmed for the Montreal ComicCon Holiday Edition, which is December 5 & 6, and Montreal Maker’s Market, which is [date]. We have a couple others we’ve applied for, and will let you all know if we’ll be there!

FUNDRAISER

Times are tough right now, and as someone originally born in Alberta (that’s me, Harpy), I’ve been paying special attention to the unfortunate issues going on there, especially regarding trans people. It’s not pretty, and it looks like it’s only going to get worse.

The Saddle Lake Cree Nation is currently using their treaty rights to create a safe haven for gender-affirming care. In their words:

We are asking Canadians, Treaty people, Indigenous Nations, health professionals, human-rights advocates, allies and people around the world to stand with us.
Saddle Lake Cree Nation is establishing a path toward making our reserve lands and territories a safe haven for gender-affirming health care, including for Two-Spirit, transgender and gender-diverse people affected by restrictive Alberta laws.
This is about more than one health service.
It is about Treaty.
It is about Indigenous sovereignty.
It is about our responsibility to care for one another.
And it is about ensuring that people can access health care with dignity, safety and respect.

Now is a great time to donate to their legal fund gofundme. If you can’t donate yourself, consider sharing the link around.

I think that’s all for now? We’ll be back soon with more, I’m sure. Thanks for stickin’ around.
